Do You Want To Be Apart Of Hermès Or Do You Just Want A Vintage Piece of It?

The Boutique Experience That Started It All

There’s a striking difference between walking into an Hermès Boutique and my recent visit to Printemps. That visit was truly inviting, thanks to Senior Client Advisor Ron Brown. He greeted me with warmth that makes you understand why people develop lifelong relationships with brands. As we chatted, I stood in awe at the global pilgrimage surrounding these coveted Hermès bags.

The Devotion Is Real

People literally travel across the world; to Paris, to Japan, just to hunt down a second-hand Hermès piece. Others patiently wait on lists for years, hoping to be chosen for a special Birkin. These devoted customers buy piece after piece, year after year. They build relationships and prove their loyalty. It’s fascinating to witness this dance between brand and buyer.

So here’s my burning question: which one are you? Do you want to be part of the Hermès rolodex, or do you just want a vintage piece of it? What’s your why for this highly anticipated connection to the brand?

Craftsmanship That Speaks for Itself

The history and hand craftsmanship speak for themselves. Skilled artisans pour hours of meticulous work into each bag. The result transcends mere fashion and enters the realm of art. But for those with no idea why people care for designer goods like Hermès, the obsession might seem puzzling.

Why I Want Both

For many, myself included, it’s an investment collector’s piece, especially when it’s a one-of-one. I want to be in the Hermès rolodex and own a vintage piece no longer in production. A true example? This orange 2004 Mon Vintage Birkin bag that recently caught my eye. There’s something magical about owning a piece of fashion history that no longer exists in current production.

Vintage Is the New Exclusive

Ron believes more people now just want a piece of it to say they have it because vintage has become the new exclusive. Honestly, he makes a compelling point. Hermès isn’t going to start inviting every purchaser to their yacht parties. They won’t be sending you mini Kellys as a push gift for your baby either. So why not have a little piece of the hype?

The vintage route offers its own thrill. You hunt for treasures with stories; bags that have lived lives before you. There’s no waiting list and no relationship-building required. Just the pure excitement of discovery. You might even snag something truly special that’s no longer in production.

The Case for the Traditional Path

There’s also something powerful about the traditional path. Building that relationship, being recognized by your sales associate, and receiving those coveted calls about new arrivals feels like membership in an exclusive club. Your loyalty earns you access to pieces others can only dream about.

Both Paths Lead to the Same Place

Both paths lead to the same destination: owning a piece of luxury that represents more than just a bag. Whether you’re team rolodex or team vintage, you’re investing in craftsmanship, history, and a status symbol that speaks without saying a word.

For those who don’t understand the allure, who question why anyone would spend such amounts on a handbag, I’ll borrow the words of one of my favorite digital creators, @thereelnotoriousvic on Instagram: “c’est la vie Heaux!” Sometimes passion doesn’t require explanation. When craftsmanship meets desire and art, the deal is sealed.
